Geek Week 2005

The pic above is from the opening of the Nintendo World store here in NYC. I met up with my ultra-coolness friend Cheryl - who may look cute and innocent but would surely kick your ass in Smash Bros, hehe. We took advantage of the perfect weekend to check out the new store and indulge in the festivities. I’ve never seen so many Gameboy SP and DS consoles - not to mention crazy Pokemon fans - before, and it was quite a sight. I can see the store be something really special when Nintendo releases Revolution, new GC Zelda, and whatnot. Can’t wait! The store’s shopping bags are pretty awesome too, hehe.
More pix can be found here. My favorite is the NES prototype in the store’s “museum” displays.
Okay, I’m going to call this week “Geek Week.” “Why?” you might ask? (Especially since every week is pretty much geek week for me for some reason or another.) Let’s see..
There are TWO things that add up to this month’s Geek Week.
1. First, there is E3, which kicks off today with Sony and Microsoft’s press conferences. The hot topic being their new consoles, respectively. The next day, Nintendo’s press conference will take place, completing the video game trinity and seeing where everybody is at. The fun continues all week long. I suggest logging onto Joystiq and Engadget as they will be having non-stop updates, and if you have an IGN Insider account, get ready for some happy-happy video streaming. I remember last year - while at the same time partying like crazy before our graduation - Peter, Chris and I were watching the main presentations, and being totally floored by the Zelda preview during Nintendo’s keynote, hehe.
While on the subject video games, I’d have to say that I appreciate Microsoft’s effort with the MTV XBox 360 launch, and while it’s pretty much obvious that they were trying to target a general, broader crowd, it’s sad that they don’t acknowledge the hardcore gaming scene. By that I mean no real (or new) details about system specs, not enough coverage on the dashboard/interface, and the little amount of realtime gameplay shown. I guess the special was a success, though I think it would of fared better if it were an hour long and not a half-hour (well.. more like 10 minutes without all the HDTV ads and The Killers, haha). They could’ve let that first 1/2 hour be as it was, and then maybe go into more detail, so the viewers - if they’re the more gamer-type - would able to get more from the show.
2. Then this Thursday, of course, is the opening day of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. Hmm.. That’s all I have to say about that.
YAY CHERYL! hhaha
