The Island quick review

The Island is coming... wha-huh?Saw the sneak peek of the film with my friend Joy at Union Square. Fun popcorn flick (like a lot movies this summer, though as a whole, it’s all pretty mediocre). Usual Michael Bay chases, action, and some humor. He’s definitely taking more pages from the book of Spielberg and Doug Liman (two great directors for chase sequences). That’s a good thing I think, but Bay does have a hard-on for those 360-degree, “hero” shots. ;)

Overall, I really got into the first half of the film as it’s more plot driven, and even feels surreal at times. The second half of the film is pretty much straight-up action and you start seeing a lot of plot holes as the film just stretches out for no reason. The opening scene to the film, in particular, is AMAZING. It reflects Bay’s background as a music video director, and even a little twist of Michel Gondry or Spike Jonze to it. So yes, I recommend it. Besides, Scarlett Johansson is very, VERY easy on the eyes, hehe (and I’m sure there are plenty of girls -and guys -who dig Ewan McGregor, right Saki?) :P

Hmm.. I have to say, has anyone notice how these futuristic films have more obvious product placement than other films? Take for example, Minority Report (Lexus, Gap, Bulgari, Revo, Nokia), I, Robot (Audi, Converse, Fed-Ex, JVC), and now The Island. This time around the car of choice are Cadillacs and the shoes to buy are Pumas. Awesome.. I can’t wait for the future!
